4 St. Louis firms make Forbes 200

Forbes included four St. Louis-area companies on its list of America's 200 Best Small Companies:  Reliv, Panera, Talx and Cass.

The 200 Best Small Companies looks for firms with sales between $5 million and $750 million. To qualify for the list, a company must have had a share price above $5 as of Sept. 29 on three-month average volume of 10,000 or more shares. Candidates also must carry profit margins of greater than 5 percent, with positive sales and profit growth, on average, over both the last five years and last 12 months.

The four area firms on Forbes' 2006 list are:

• Chesterfield, Mo.-based Reliv International Inc. (Nasdaq: RELV) moved up this year to the No. 14 spot from a ranking of 43rd in 2005. This marks the second consecutive year the manufacturer and distributor of nutritional supplements, food products and skin care products has made the list.

• St. Louis-based Panera Bread Co. (Nasdaq: PNRA) fell to 30th place on the 2006 list from the 28th spot it held last year. The company has been on the Forbes 200 list for four consecutive years. It owns and franchises bakery-cafes under the St. Louis Bread Co. and Panera Bread names.

• St. Louis-based Talx Corp. (Nasdaq: TALX) dropped 11 spots to No. 40 on this year's list. Last year the firm, which has been ranked for five consecutive years, earned the No. 29 slot. Talx offers HR and payroll-related outsourced services including employment verification, unemployment cost and tax management, and associated paperless solutions.

• For its Forbes 200 list debut, Bridgeton, Mo.-based Cass Information Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CASS) was awarded the No. 170 position. The company provides payables services and information support systems, and operates Cass Commercial Bank in St. Louis.
